Bed Bug Adaptation…

How long can survive without a blood meal is directly related to why these blood-sucking parasites are so difficult to get rid of. Bed bugs seem to have adapted to starvation, and while they can eventually stop laying eggs, bed bugs can survive for a long time without blood, while still continuing to lay eggs regularly. Bed bug eradication without heat remediation is not guaranteed, as an adult bed bug can live without food for several months or even over a year in perfect cases.

18 Months, Wow!…

Scientists studying them also found that adult bed bugs can survive without food for up to 18 months if living conditions are optimal. Bed bugs need to eat (blood meals) to survive, but according to scientific research, untouched adult bed bugs can even have a lifespan of up to 14 months in not so optimal settings as well. Even with no humans around, if there were animals in the house that bedbugs could feed on, they can live much longer than the expected 5-7 months without a blood food source.

If there was absolutely no host to feed on for blood, a young bed bug could die in just a few weeks, while an adult bed bug could live up to 7 months at optimal temperature and humidity before dying from starvation. Bed bugs can live up to 400 days without blood. They can easily wait for you to spend money on every idea available on the internet. Of course a bed bug surviving for 400 days is in optimal environments only. Most bed bugs will live around 5-7 months total.

Do Temperatures matter?…

According to the UCLA Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the average bed bug can linger for 20 to 400 days between feedings if the proper temperature and humidity conditions are met. Bed bugs cannot survive for more than 3 weeks if the temperature in the house remains below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, and they will eventually die if exposed to temperatures above 113 degrees Fahrenheit for a long period.

What About Empty Homes?…

In most cases, even in situations where the house is left empty for a long period of time, we still recommend that bed bugs be destroyed as quickly as possible to prevent infestation and serious damage to the furniture, and to ensure that they are gone for good. Since bed bugs are mobile and can spread throughout a building, it is often necessary to inspect additional rooms and apartments or areas especially those likely to be infested because of a food source is regularly appearing. If someone brought an infestation into a home and then moved out or died, the infestation can still thrive due to the bed bug's ability to live without food for an extended period of time. They can even survive from each other's excrement, poop. You see their droppings are not always completely digested leaving some blood platelets still intact for vital nutrition for them.

Stronger strains of bed bugs, had the longest survival time and yet most did not live past 130 days (on average). This UCLA Department of Agriculture study also showed that the average survival time after fasting of virgin adult male and female bed bugs in each strain was the same (43.7–92.6 days for adult females and 42.9–99.4 days for adult males).

Summary…

In conclusion, most bed bugs will normally only survive about 5-7 months without a blood meal source. They can however survive for much longer periods of over 1 year if conditions are optimal. Meaning their food source is regular and the temperature and atmosphere is unchanging.
