Can bed bugs survive a clothes washer?…

Yes there’s a chance that bed bugs could survive a clothes washer. It’s best to use the heat from a clothes dryer to kill any bed bugs or eggs. Using a clothes washer to try to kill bed bugs (even with hot water) can back fire. With washers the water splashes and that in turn could splash bed bugs out of harm’s way. They could also just crawl out of harms way before the water reaches them in the washer. You’d be surprised what bed bugs can survive through.

Dryer heat is a better way to kill bed bugs on fabrics…

Using a dryer on high heat for no less than 1 hour is the easiest way to kill every bed bug or egg that could possibly be hiding.

Dryer heat is much safer to kill bed bugs than a clothes washer even with hot water.

Always use dryer heat before washing even with hot water…

As stated above a clothes washer has a great possibility of a bed bug surviving a rinse and spin cycle even with hot water. With a dryer there’s basically no chance of survival assuming you properly place the bags opening into the dryer while removing facbrics to place in the clothes dryer.

All facbrics should be sealed in trash bags and stored outside of a residence being treated for bed bugs…

All prepped trash bags will go outside of a home during a bed bug treatment. It doesn’t matter if it’s a chemical only bed bug service or a chemical and heat bed bug extermination, they will need stored outside the residence during the pest control for bed bugs.

Where can you keep trashbags with items prepped for a bed bug treatment?…

Where you choose to keep the prepped trash bags during the treatment is your choice, as long as it’s not inside the residence being serviced. Some clients keep the prepped bags in sheds, garages, under covered parking, porches, etc. Some customers even stack the bags in the yard under a tarp or in tents.

Pro Tip: When leaving trash bags in a yard or tent it’s best to make sure they are up off the ground incase of heavy rains with flash flooding.

To sum it up…

It is best to wait till after your treatment is completed to start laundering fabrics. Some clients do fabrics on the day of the treatment at a laundromat. Take the sealed trash bags to the laundry one by one as you dry each bag and place entire bag in the dryer before opening bag and removing items. Dry all items on high heat for at least 1 hour. DO NOT WASH FIRST! DRY 1ST, WASH SECOND (if needed) , THEN DRY AGAIN. After cloth items have been heated for the full hour you may wash and redry. Use both washer and dryer on high heat. Please throw away all used trash bags in outside trash, as they could be infested. Do not reuse trash bags or boxes used during a bed bug treatment.
